Step-by-Step Guide to Opening Your Swimming Pool in the Spring

Opening your pool correctly in the spring is crucial for maintaining water quality, preventing algae growth, safeguarding equipment, enhancing enjoyment during the swimming season, and avoiding costly repairs. It ensures your pool is clean, safe, and prepared for use, setting the stage for a season of relaxation and fun.

This guide offers essential information and tips for opening your pool this spring.

  • First and foremost, start by removing any debris, leaves, or other objects that may have accumulated on the pool cover during the winter months. Gently clean the cover before taking it off to prevent any dirt from falling into the water.
  • Next, carefully remove the pool cover and store it properly for future use. Inspect the cover for any damages that may need repairs before storing it away. Rinse the cover off and wait until it is completely dry to store.
  • Once the cover is off, it's time to reassemble any swimming pool accessories that were removed for the winter, such as ladders, handrails, or diving boards. Check for any signs of wear and tear and make any repairs with the necessary swimming pool equipment parts replacements.
  • Afterward, begin to fill the pool to the appropriate water level and start up the filtration system. We recommend using a Pool & Spa Water Pre-Filter to capture any contaminants before they enter your swimming sanctuary. In addition, Use a Water Test Kit or Test Strips to Ensure Correct Water Chemistry after the filter has been running for at least 24 hours. Also, adjust the water balance, and add in water balancers or chlorine as needed to ensure a safe and clean swimming environment.
  • Lastly, give the pool a thorough cleaning by scrubbing the walls and vacuuming the floor to remove any dirt or algae buildup. This would be a great time to use your automatic pool cleaner!  Follow your chemical steps based on your sanitizing system.

By following these steps and staying on top of regular pool maintenance throughout the season, you can ensure that your pool remains a source of enjoyment for you, your family, and your friends all summer long.

  1. Pro Tip: Once you have your pH in balance, we highly recommend using ProTeam SupremePLUS.  This is a pool water conditioner that helps maintain your pH levels, creates softer and more crisp water, and uses less chlorine!
